Murray Off-Road Adventures: Bus trip to the Murray River Nangiloc (Policeman’s Bend)
GreenConnect Mildura participants recently had the opportunity to undertake a trip to the Murray River with a local off-road bus tour operator.
Four people with dementia, four carers, a Care friend and Mildura Respite Care Coordinator enjoyed a cool but gloriously sunny day, immersed in nature and making new friends.
The group met at the Mildura Wharf and travelled via Cardross to Nangiloc “Police Bend” sandbar.
Upon arrival, many disembarked the bus and undertook a gentle river track walk, collecting dry kindling and leaves for the sandbar campfire.
Eliesha collecing firewood
With the fire lit, deckchairs were positioned with the sunshine on our backs and a perfect vantage point to enjoy ‘gazing into the red coals of the fire’.
A couple of keen fishermen enjoyed trying their luck with rod and bait, without any success.
Biddy and Max fishing
One first time participant celebrated his birthday with new friends on the day.
3 cheers for John on his birthday
All enjoyed a wholesome selection of crusty salad rolls, jelly cakes and a rowdy rendition of happy birthday, topped off with the birthday boy’s favourite jelly slice as his birthday cake.
Shared conversations, laughter, lots of storytelling and quick wit was enjoyed, while watching the river flow by at a gentle pace.
It was soon time to pack the deckchairs up, smother the sandbar fire and board the bus for a leisurely river track drive past gazing kangaroos, canoe scar trees and bat caves in the hollows of very old trees.
Participants completed the satisfaction survey with overwhelming responses of:
“Such a lovely day”
“We both enjoyed the wonderful outing greatly. Max loved telling our daughter about the day. We cannot think of any way it could have been done better”
“I cannot begin to tell you how much Les got out of going to the river. He has recalled much of the detail and asks if we could do that again. A lovely memory thank you”
“Loved the fire, food, friendship and fishing”
