A Journey Through the Millewa’s Pioneering History

A cloudless winter’s day greeted the GreenConnect Dementia Respite group as they set off with Murray Offroad Adventures for a memorable bus trip to Meringur and the Millewa Pioneer Village.
Travelling via the old mail road, the group headed west through station country, past Wallpolla Creek and lush green farmland before joining the Sturt Highway. A brief stop at Lake Cullulleraine provided an opportunity to stretch their legs and enjoy the picturesque surroundings before continuing on to Meringur.
Their first stop was the cemetery, where many pioneering families of the district are remembered, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region.
The group then made their way into the township to visit the Millewa Pioneer Village, where bus tour operator and Park Committee President Peter welcomed everyone and unlocked the historic Yarrara Hall. There, participants gathered around a large table to enjoy lunch together as the afternoon sunshine streamed through the old timber sash windows.
As always, Jeanie excelled with a wonderful homemade lunch, preparing a selection of hearty soups, crusty bread rolls, Anzac biscuits and traditional boiled fruit cake, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by the group.
Following lunch, Peter led a fascinating guided walking tour of the village, exploring more than 50 historical sites featuring restored buildings, vintage machinery, historical records and the Pioneer Park, where families connected to the Millewa planted native trees to commemorate the park’s opening in 1986.
The tour provided a wonderful insight into the lives of the pioneering families who established the Millewa region in the early 1920s and the enterprising local businesses that supported the farming community, including bakers, mechanics, dressmakers, postmasters and general storekeepers. Participants explored beautifully preserved buildings, framed photographs of local farming families, displays of sporting memorabilia and an impressive collection of horse-drawn equipment, early tractors and tray trucks. Highlights included the beautifully preserved Simpson Cottage and the old Meringur School, each offering a unique glimpse into life in years gone by.
With the afternoon drawing to a close, it was time to board the bus and begin the return journey to Mildura via the Werrimull Silo Art and Memorial Wall. Along the way, a majestic wedge-tailed eagle soared overhead, while an unexpectedly speedy echidna made its way across the road, providing a memorable end to the day.
