Growing Community Reflects the Power of Connection in Bendigo
Story by Jade Field, Respite Care Coordinator, Bendigo
The GreenConnect community in Bendigo continues to grow, with six people attending for the first time at the group’s recent mid-winter morning tea at Omari Café in the Bendigo Botanic Gardens.
Despite the gentle winter rain outside, extra chairs were added to the table as new and familiar faces came together to share coffee, cake and conversation. Warm introductions quickly gave way to lively discussion, highlighting the welcoming and inclusive environment that has become a hallmark of GreenConnect.
The morning also provided an opportunity to strengthen connections beyond the program, with Cheryle, Respite Intake Coordinator from Uniting AgeWell, joining the group as a special guest. Cheryle coordinates a monthly Bendigo carer support group and a range of weekly social activities, sharing valuable information about additional opportunities for people living with dementia and their carers to stay connected within the community.
The conversation reinforced a theme that continues to resonate throughout GreenConnect – the importance of social connection following a dementia diagnosis. Having opportunities to meet others with shared experiences in a supportive environment can help rebuild confidence, foster new friendships and reduce the risk of social isolation.
As the morning drew to a close, participants left refreshed by plenty of coffee, cake and connection, with six new people now part of a growing community that continues to support one another through shared experiences.
