GreenConnect Bendigo Morning Tea Brings Shared Experiences to the Table
Story by Jade Field, Respite Care Coordinator, Bendigo
With new blossom in the Bendigo Botanic Gardens hinting at the imminent arrival of spring, GreenConnect participants enjoyed a lively and welcoming August morning tea.
Old and new friends warmly greeted one another as everyone settled in for a morning of conversation, coffee and delicious food. With almost 30 people attending, the group was pleased to welcome two new members to their first GreenConnect activity.
Conversation flowed easily, ranging from plans for spring gardens to the upcoming AFL finals. With community aged care also receiving significant media attention, participants shared their own experiences of in home services, home care packages and service providers.
There was plenty of swapping stories and advice, particularly among those who had found themselves in similar situations. These conversations can make it a little easier to navigate community supports, while also providing the reassurance of talking with someone who understands.
As one participant explained:
“The thing is, we understand, you see. We know what it’s like to feel a bit lost and not know what to do. Being here really helps because we all know what the other person is going through.”
Others reflected on the friendships and sense of belonging they have found through the group:
“It was really wonderful today – I came home and really felt the benefits of us all being there together. It was just lovely.”
“Thanks again for a great morning – it was nice to have a chance to talk to some people I actually have a lot in common with.”
“It’s always good to see some new faces as well, I think it’s so important for them to know they’re not alone.”
All too soon, cups of tea were finished and the last scones eaten. Many participants enjoyed a wander through the gardens on the way back to their cars, chatting about the week ahead.
The Bendigo group will come together again in September, when special guest Libby Wade, Regional Community Dementia Nurse Consultant from Bendigo Health, will join the morning tea.
