GreenConnect Mildura Celebrates Christmas with Stories, Friendship and Music
Story by Kaye Matthews, Respite Care Coordinator Mildura
Sixty-four GreenConnect Dementia Respite participants, volunteer care friends, Mildura Men’s Shed volunteers and clients, along with key community partners, recently gathered at the Gol Gol Hotel NSW on the banks of the Mighty Murray River to celebrate the end of a wonderful year of GreenConnect Dementia activities, connection, and friendship.
Attendees included Dementia Australia Support Specialist Bertilla, GreenConnect Respite Care Coordinator Kaye, new staff member Julie, Murray Offroad Adventures tour operators Pete and Jeanie, Princes Court Limited CEO Anthony and Executive Manager of Care Kevin. The celebration was generously hosted by the family of existing GreenConnect participants at their Gol Gol Hotel.
Guests were warmly welcomed by Kaye and Bertilla. During her address, Kaye reflected on words recently shared by GreenConnect Consortium member and La Trobe University academic Sean McDermott: “The shortest distance between two people begins with a story.” This sentiment perfectly captured the spirit of the day.
The venue was beautifully presented with crisp white linen tablecloths, Christmas bonbons, and festive decorations. Julie added a personal touch by contributing three large bunches of hydrangeas from her garden, creating a stunning floral display. Adding to the joy of the occasion, participant Lew delighted guests by performing on his violin.
Guests enjoyed a delicious meal, warm hospitality, and exemplary service. Conversation and laughter filled the room as stories were shared and new friendships formed, reflecting the strong sense of community nurtured throughout the year.
A particularly touching moment came when one participant living with dementia delivered a heartwarming speech, wishing everyone friendship, good health, and happiness for the festive season, and extending warm wishes for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
The celebration was a fitting and joyful conclusion to a year defined by connection, care, and community.
