GreenConnect Carers and Participants Come Together for Bendigo Bowls Day
Story by Jade Field, Respite Care Coordinator, Bendigo
GreenConnect participants recently enjoyed a morning of education, information and activities at Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club.
Hosted by Carers Victoria, the exclusive event was an opportunity for GreenConnect carers to learn more about the resources and services available across the Bendigo region. Twenty-four participants attended the day, including four people new to the GreenConnect project.
After tea and scones on arrival, participants living with dementia headed out onto the green for a session of lawn bowls, warmly supported by volunteers from Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club. Friendly rivalry soon emerged as several ends were played throughout the morning.
Among the group were two experienced bowlers who even brought along their own bowls for the day. Their years of experience came in handy, with both happy to encourage and guide those trying the sport for the first time.
Trying a new activity outdoors, surrounded by fresh air and good company, created an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere for everyone involved.
While bowls took place outside, education sessions for GreenConnect carers were delivered by Abbey from Carers Victoria and Niki from Bendigo Health Carer Support Services. Discussions covered a range of topics including available services, counselling and coaching supports, and navigating aged care and carer systems. Carers also had the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and learn from one another.
Peer support and firsthand knowledge continue to play an important role for many people in caring roles.
The GreenConnect group later came back together over lunch and conversation. One participant, who had previously been a long-time member of the bowls club, enjoyed reconnecting with familiar faces and reminiscing about time spent at the club over the years.
As a thank you – and with a nod to Mother’s Day – participants were gifted a mini cyclamen as they departed.
The morning reflected the value of community partnerships, local volunteers and shared experiences in creating welcoming spaces for both carers and people living with dementia.
GreenConnect extends sincere thanks to the volunteers and members of Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club, whose support helped make the morning possible. Their generosity in providing the club facilities, kitchen support and assistance on the green created a welcoming space for participants, carers and staff.
The club’s volunteers regularly support many community groups across Bendigo, and their contribution was warmly appreciated by everyone involved in the day.
