GreenConnect Participants Discover Hidden Tracks and Local Stories on Mildura Bus Trip
Story by Kaye Matthews, Respite Care Coordinator Mildura
GreenConnect participants recently enjoyed a beautiful late-autumn outing aboard a Murray Offroad Adventures bus trip, exploring hidden tracks, local history and the natural beauty surrounding the Mildura region.
Two new couples were warmly welcomed onboard, joining other participants, care friend Trish, staff member Julie A, Care Coordinator Kaye Matthews and tour operators Jeanie and Peter Kelly for the day’s adventure.
The first stop was west of Koorlong, where Peter pointed out four large wedge-tailed eagle nests, including one active nest. Participants learned about the wedge-tailed eagle – Australia’s largest bird of prey – including its impressive wingspan of up to 2.5 metres and breeding habits across the region.
The group then travelled on to Lake Cullulleraine before stopping at Lock 9 for a shared lunch. Jeanie treated everyone to homemade soup, crusty bread rolls, ginger cake, Anzac biscuits and fresh fruit.
Later in the day, participants travelled along sandy red loam tracks to the original pumping station, which is scheduled to celebrate its centenary in June 2026. The return journey followed the old mail road, including a detour through a nearby station property featuring historic shearing sheds, station dwellings and modern sheep yards.
The group returned to the Mildura Wharf in the afternoon after a day filled with friendship, conversation and discovery.
Participants reflected warmly on the experience afterwards:
“It was our first time coming and we were made to feel very welcome. We loved the company of everyone and it was so lovely to view the country from the luxury of the offroad bus without having to drive.”
“I have lived in this area all my life and have never been on the tracks we travelled today. I continued to see new things on our way home. We loved every minute of it.”
“Bob loved the cake and the people.”
