Planning Ahead: Conversations at The Cottage – Mildura
Story by Kaye Matthews, Respite Care Coordinator Mildura
A recent GreenConnect gathering at The Cottage in Mildura brought together 30 participants, alongside volunteer care friends and staff, for a relaxed morning over tea.
With new outdoor seating recently installed by Mildura Rural City Council, many chose to spend time outside, enjoying the space and the company. Conversations moved easily across the tables – catching up, sharing updates and reflecting on recent experiences.
During the morning, Jason Bell, Aged Care Specialist Officer from Services Australia, joined the group to talk through what’s involved in navigating entry into aged care, including the financial and reporting processes that come with it. He works alongside Matthew Woodford, Financial Services Officer, and outlined the support available to help people understand and move through this stage, noting current wait times for appointments are around four weeks.
The discussion prompted a number of questions and reflections across the group, particularly around timing, planning ahead and understanding what to expect.
There was also strong interest in upcoming Dementia Support Australia “Staying at Home” programs, with the Mildura group referring 20 people across the two programs and a waitlist forming for additional couples. Conversations also turned to some planned Murray Offroad bus trips.
As the morning unfolded, discussion began to turn to what may come next for GreenConnect. The strength of feeling in the room was clear – these gatherings have become an important part of people’s lives, and there is a shared hope that the opportunity to come together in this way can continue.
Month by month, The Cottage continues to be a place where people gather, reconnect and support one another – in conversation, in shared experience and in time spent together.
