Morning Tea in July at “The Cottage”
Bertilla Campbell and Kaye Matthews
Participants of GreenConnect Dementia respite gathered mid-winter for a morning of connection, information sharing and good company over morning tea.
Twenty-three participants attended, along with one care friend, Dementia Australia Support Specialist Bertilla, guest speaker Tania from Mallee Family Care’s Community Legal Centre, and Princes Court’s Respite Care Coordinator, Kaye.
Morning tea
Four new participants were warmly welcomed and quickly found common ground with others. One participant, who had grown up on a family station property, recognised a fellow carer whose mother had been the governess on that same station. The connections didn’t stop there – several had attended the same small country school, where one participant living with dementia had once been the head teacher. The room filled with laughter, shared memories, and lively conversation.

Guest speaker Tania provided an informative session on the supports available through the “Community Legal Centre” at Mallee Family Care. She outlined how intake officers triage enquiries and offer timely appointments to reduce stress and uncertainty. Tania also discussed how the service can assist with matters such as powers of attorney, wills, elder abuse, housing vulnerability and homelessness, domestic violence, financial challenges, and social support needs.

Participants shared their reflections on the day:
“Always such a welcoming group. Everything is considered – the food, the coffee, the flowers on the table, the guest speakers. We feel so lucky to be part of this friendship group.”
“This is our first time coming and I felt brave enough to share our recent experience of being scammed. No one judged me or made me feel silly. Just a rich understanding and empathy.”
“This morning tea is a highlight of our month and we are so grateful Jenny can transport us. Les regularly repeats the story of his happy place when we did the bus trip to the river.”
