Expanding Access and Strengthening Connections: GreenConnect’s Growing Network of Support
Jade Field, Respite Care Coordinator in Bendigo with Catherine Hyett, GreenConnect’s Project Manager
“As the project continues to grow, it’s been heartening to see the way our community and sector partners have embraced GreenConnect,” says Catherine Hyett, GreenConnect Project Manager. “It shows there’s a strong need for more flexible, community-based support options.”
Welcoming Participants with NDIS and Home Care Packages
A growing number of GreenConnect participants are supported through the NDIS or a Home Care Package – and some may not realise they’re eligible to join.
GreenConnect is pleased to confirm that participants with early onset dementia (under NDIS) and those on Home Care Packages are welcome to attend our group activities.
From initial enquiry to care planning, Coordinators work closely with carers and people living with dementia to ensure the program meets their needs. The project team is committed to making participation as flexible and accessible as possible. Where another service may be a better fit, we will work with families to guide them toward the right support. This personalised approach helps ensure that every family feels supported.
“The participants are the heart of GreenConnect – we work closely with families, service providers, and care teams to make sure no one misses out. Whether support comes through the NDIS or a Home Care Package, we help people find their way into the program and feel confident taking part.” – Kaye Matthews, Respite Care Coordinator, Mildura

Referral Growth Through Strong Community Partnerships
Referrals into the project continue to come from a wide range of valued sources – including Dementia Australia Support Specialists, Sunraysia Carers Support Group, Chirpy Chicks facilitators, Bendigo Health, Sunraysia Community Health Services’ COPE (Care of People with dementia in their Environments) program, and from participants and families themselves.
The Bendigo team has recently distributed new brochures and program information to local GPs, health clinics, and retirement villages to help build awareness and encourage referrals.
A monthly Dementia Focus Group, hosted by GreenConnect, also continues to bring together local stakeholders to share resources and increase community understanding of dementia-specific supports.
“It’s about joining the dots – working together with existing providers and local networks to ensure people know about GreenConnect and feel welcomed. We want to make it as easy as possible for families and professionals to refer, and for participants to feel supported right from the start.” – Jade Field, Respite Care Coordinator, Heathcote Health
In Mildura, Respite Care Coordinator Kaye Matthews has met with key staff within Sunraysia Community Health Services to strengthen collaboration between those who provide diagnostics and support to people living with dementia and their carers, which could include the Cognitive Dementia and Memory Service (CDAMS), COPE program, or Aged Care Assessment Services (ACAS).
Community Education Events and Cross-Regional Interest

In April, GreenConnect presented alongside Carers Victoria and Dementia Australia at a well-attended community event in Heathcote focused on practical strategies for carers. While hosted in Heathcote, the session attracted attendees from across the Bendigo region – highlighting the reach and relevance of this shared support model.
GreenConnect has also extended an invitation to Dementia Support Australia to join the Bendigo Dementia Focus Group – a new initiative bringing together local services to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and collaborate on improving dementia supports in the region.
Making Referrals Easier for Providers
To support our growing referral network, GreenConnect has launched a new section on our website specifically for health and community service providers. This dedicated page makes it easier to refer individuals to the GreenConnect Dementia Respite project and includes a downloadable referral form as well as an online submission option.
Visit our For Providers page to learn more and help connect your clients with inclusive, nature-based dementia support.
Overnight Respite Pilots: Tailored and Group-Based Models
Three overnight respite stays were piloted in April and May using a carer-led model, allowing participants to select their preferred location and nature-based activities. These tailored stays support both carers and participants by providing rest and shared experiences in a calm, natural environment.
The team is now working toward piloting a group-based model, in partnership with existing respite services. These future stays will incorporate dementia-specific activities, opportunities for education, and a sense of community for both carers and participants.
Continued Engagement Across the Sector
GreenConnect’s Mildura and Bendigo teams remain active across the region through presentations, collaborative planning, and community engagement:
Mildura team highlights: Presentations to Bendigo Health Community Care Services, Dementia Australia, and ACPAN (Aged Care Planning and Advisory Network); monthly MST meetings; collaboration with Murray Offroad Adventures, Mildura Rural City Council, and ongoing partnership with La Trobe University on program evaluation.
Bendigo team highlights: Presentations to Echuca Regional Health, and Bendigo RSL; development of an intergenerational sensory garden and mural in collaboration with Huntly Kindergarten.
