Story by Kaye Matthews, Care Coordinator Mildura
GreenConnect Mildura participants recently enjoyed a delightful spring outing to the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens in Mourquong, NSW.
The clear, blue-sky morning began in the picturesque Magenta Shearing Shed, where Volunteer Coordinator Gwen and her helpers had arranged the tables and chairs and prepared a delicious spread of homemade scones with jam and cream, assorted sandwiches and fresh fruit platters.
Anthony Fotia from Curly Top Espresso was also on hand with his Piaggio coffee cart, serving hot coffee and tea. No words were needed as Anthony remembered each person’s preferred drink, delivering it with his trademark broad smile.
The Mildura group warmly welcomed a new couple, who joined 34 other participants, three volunteer care friends and a GreenConnect staff member.
The morning was filled with conversation, laughter and the pleasure of catching up with old friends. The newest couple, who had spent their working lives as dryland farmers, quickly found common ground with others who had also retired to Mildura after working on the land.
There was also an opportunity for a little armchair travel, with several participants keen to hear stories from a recent trip to Japan. One participant shared that they were preparing for their own trip to Japan just two weeks later.
Exploring the gardens
With morning tea enjoyed, it was time to board the tractor train for a guided tour of the expansive and diverse gardens.
Under the experienced guidance of volunteer tour guide Vic Eddie, the group set off on a leisurely 45-minute journey through the gardens. Vic’s friendly manner and knowledgeable commentary brought the gardens to life along the way.
Spring colour was also on show, with Sturt’s desert pea, paper daisies and roses in bloom, alongside ripening quandongs.
Participants also enjoyed seeing the many improvements made throughout the gardens since GreenConnect’s previous visit in May this year.
At the end of the outing, participants completed satisfaction surveys, with feedback overwhelmingly positive.
“Such a lovely day – thank you for inviting us for the first time.”
“It was so lovely here today. I think we should come back and walk slowly through the expansive gardens.”
For one participant, the visit also brought back a personal connection to the gardens:
“My first job was with the founders of this park, and they were so lovely to work for at Sunraysia Nurseries. What a legacy they have left here!”
Another reflected on the importance of spending time with others who understand the caring role:
“I really enjoyed today, and it is nice to again reflect that my carer’s role is not done in isolation, despite some of the challenges we have had recently. I value the friendship and kindness.”
What seemed to matter most was simply being together – having time to talk, share experiences and build friendships with people who understand.
A big thank you to all the volunteers, staff and everyone who helped make the day so enjoyable.
